How to read a VIN, position by position
Federal rule 49 CFR Part 565 sets the structure of the 17-character VIN used on U.S. vehicles. The letters I, O, and Q are never used, so they can’t be confused with 1 and 0 (49 CFR 565.15).
| Position | Section | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 | World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI) | Manufacturer and, through the first character, the region |
| 4–8 | Vehicle descriptor | For passenger cars: make, line, series, body type, engine type, and restraint devices |
| 9 | Check digit | Mathematical check that catches transcription errors |
| 10 | Model year | e.g., A = 2010, F = 2015, L = 2020, S = 2025, Y = 2030 |
| 11 | Plant | Assembly plant |
| 12–17 | Serial number | Sequential production number (small manufacturers use part of it for their own identifier) |
Model-year codes run through the alphabet and then the digits, so the same letter repeats every 30 years. Always read position 10 together with the vehicle’s age and style.
| Year | Code | Year | Code | Year | Code |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2014 | E | 2018 | J | 2022 | N |
| 2015 | F | 2019 | K | 2023 | P |
| 2016 | G | 2020 | L | 2024 | R |
| 2017 | H | 2021 | M | 2025 | S |
What is trim level?
Trim level, often shown as a series or grade (such as base, sport, or limited), is the equipment package within a model. Under the federal rule, series is one of the attributes coded in positions 4–8 for passenger cars (49 CFR 565.15). Trim can decide things a buyer never thinks about, including the whole key system.
Why trim changes the key
- Ignition type. Lower trims of a model year may use a turn-key ignition with a transponder key or remote-head key. Higher trims may use push-button start with a proximity smart key.
- Button count. Remote start, power liftgate, or sliding doors add buttons, and a 4-button fob is not interchangeable with a 5-button fob.
- Frequency and FCC ID. Keys that look the same can transmit on different frequencies or carry different FCC IDs.
- Market. Export and domestic versions can differ.
How to decode a VIN for free
NHTSA’s Product Information Catalog and Vehicle Listing (vPIC) decoder is free and needs no registration. It accepts full or partial VINs and returns make, model, model year, body class, plant, and, where the manufacturer has reported it, trim (NHTSA vPIC). NHTSA notes that the data “is reported by the manufacturer,” so some fields, trim included, can be blank. If trim is missing, check the vehicle, the window sticker, or the dealer.
- Read the VIN from the driver-side dashboard plate (through the windshield), the door jamb label, or the title or registration.
- Enter it at vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/decoder, or in our Find Your Key tool.
- Note the model year, model, and trim or series. Then confirm the ignition type in person: is there a key slot or a start button?
From VIN to FCC ID to the correct key
An FCC ID identifies a certified radio transmitter, such as a key fob. It has two parts: a grantee code and a product code. Grantee codes issued before May 1, 2013 have three characters. Codes issued from that date begin with a digit from 2 to 9 and have five characters (FCC Public Notice DA 13-669, April 9, 2013). The product code can be up to 14 characters.
| Step | What to check | Where |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Decode | Year, make, model, trim | NHTSA vPIC or Find Your Key |
| 2. Confirm ignition | Turn key vs. push start; blade profile | The vehicle |
| 3. Read the old key | FCC ID printed on the case back or inside the shell; OEM part number | Customer’s existing key |
| 4. Cross-reference | FCC ID, frequency, chip, buttons | FCC ID lookup table and FCC/OEM fitment guide |
| 5. Cut and program | Blade cut and immobilizer programming | See our key programmer guide |
If you order by FCC ID, a matching blank, frequency, and button layout usually follow. Still confirm the button count and blade style against the customer’s key, because some FCC IDs cover more than one housing.
Why VINs matter to theft investigators too
VINs are how stolen vehicles are traced, which is why thieves try to hide them. In an April 2026 federal case in Washington, D.C., prosecutors said a ring swapped license plates and concealed VINs on stolen Hondas and Acuras before shipping some of them to Ghana (Insurance Journal, April 28, 2026). A locksmith who compares the dash VIN with the registration before cutting a key is doing real fraud prevention. California law requires recording the vehicle’s registration or identification number on every automotive work order (Cal. B&P Code 6980.55).
Frequently asked questions
What does each digit of a VIN mean?
Positions 1–3 identify the manufacturer, 4–8 describe the vehicle’s attributes (model line, series, body, engine, restraints), and 9 is a check digit. Position 10 is the model year, 11 is the plant, and 12–17 are the serial number (49 CFR 565.15). Each manufacturer defines its own codes for positions 4–8, so you need a decoder to read them.
How to decode a VIN number for free?
Use NHTSA’s vPIC decoder at vpic.nhtsa.dot.gov/decoder. It is free, requires no account, and returns data reported by the manufacturer (NHTSA). For key fitment, our Find Your Key tool connects the decoded vehicle to compatible keys.
How do I find my FCC ID for my car?
Look on the back of the existing fob or inside the battery compartment for “FCC ID:” followed by the code. If no key is available, decode the VIN, confirm the trim and ignition type, and look up that vehicle in our FCC ID table. The first three or five characters are the grantee code (FCC).
Can I find the keyless entry code using my VIN number?
Not on your own. Key codes and immobilizer PINs tied to a VIN are released by automakers through dealers, or to NASTF-registered Vehicle Security Professionals with a secure ID and passcode (NASTF). Expect to show proof of ownership.
