Professional Locksmith Tools — buyer questions
Read this before you order: matching the FCC ID and part number is what determines whether a replacement works.
Are these tools suitable for a first-time user?
Some are, and some are strictly professional. Lishi-style picks, key cutting machines and diagnostic programmers all assume you already understand the lock or immobiliser you are working on. Read the listing for the specific vehicle systems a tool covers, because coverage varies by make, year and protocol rather than being universal.
Will one tool cover every vehicle?
No, and any tool advertised that way should be treated with suspicion. Pick and decoder tools are cut for a specific keyway, so an HU100 tool fits HU100 locks and nothing else. Programmers are limited by the protocols and model years in their software. Always check the stated coverage list against the vehicles you actually work on.
How do I identify the right keyway or blade profile?
Compare the cross-section of the original blade with the profile named in the listing, such as HU100, HU101 or TOY48. The keyway code is the deciding factor, not the vehicle badge, because one manufacturer can use several keyways across its range and across model years.
Do these tools include software or subscriptions?
It depends on the tool. Mechanical picks and decoders need nothing further. Electronic programmers often ship with a software version and may need updates or tokens for newer vehicles. Check what is included before ordering so the tool is usable on arrival.
