Autel for Automotive Locksmiths: IM508/IM608 Techniques, Pros, Cons and Pitfalls

Short answer Autel’s MaxiIM line (IM508S and IM608 Pro II / IM608S II) combines immobilizer programming, all-keys-lost functions, EEPROM/MCU work and full diagnostics in one tablet. It’s strong on OBD coverage and guided workflows. The downsides are yearly update costs, extra adapters for bench jobs, and new NASTF SDRM credential requirements in North America. Your process matters as much as the tool: read the data first, back it up, keep the voltage stable, and verify who owns the car.

The current Autel key-programming lineup

Autel sells two main MaxiIM tiers to locksmiths. Both run the same IMMO application, but they ship with different programmers and hardware.

MaxiIM IM508S

Autel’s store lists the IM508S at $1,299 (regular $1,399). It comes with the XP200 key programmer, EEPROM adapters and sockets, and a 1-year free software update. Autel’s product page describes a 7-inch Android 11 tablet with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage. It also says that “all functions are covered most extensively when paired with XP400 PRO and its accessories” (sold separately).

MaxiIM IM608 Pro II / IM608S II

The flagship is listed on Autel’s store as the IM608S II / IM608 PRO II at $3,695 (regular $3,795). The kit includes the XP400 Pro key programmer, the MaxiFlash JVCI+ and a set of MCU adapters (FQFP64 through FQFP176), plus an EEPROM adapter and socket. Autel lists Read PIN/CS (all keys lost), key generation, key learning, remote learning, IMMO ECU reset/adaptation, and transponder and EEPROM/MCU read/write. In a May 2024 Locksmith Ledger overview, the IM608 Pro II “enables key learning directly through the OBDII port for 85 percent of vehicles in North America.” The same article mentions the optional IMKPA adapter kit for extra Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi coverage.

Core functions, at a professional-overview level

Autel’s IM608 II / IM608 Pro II user manual says the IMMO app “retrieves vehicle IMMO information and performs IMMO related functions, including Key Learning, Remote Control Learning, Remote Control Add.” It offers three entry modes: Automatic Selection (guided), Manual Selection and System Selection. Under Automatic Selection, the manual lists IMMO Status Scan, Control Unit, Hot Function and Vehicle IMMO Information.

Most shops work in the same order. Do each step as a separate job and don’t skip ahead:

The manual shows vehicle voltage status on the IMMO navigation bar, and Autel’s store page lists an active internet connection as a requirement. Put a stable network connection and a battery maintainer on your pre-job checklist.

Advantages for a key-programming business

Disadvantages to budget for

Security rules are changing: NASTF SDRM

On July 1, 2026, Autel announced a phased rollout of NASTF Secure Data Release Model (SDRM) validation. The KM100 comes first, starting in Q3 2026. Autel’s SDRM Resource Center says the IM508 and IM608 series follow in later phases. Once validation is live, users enter a NASTF Vehicle Security Professional (VSP) ID and a passcode from NASTF’s multi-factor authentication app for supported security functions, including all keys lost and immobilizer functions.

NASTF’s support center says VSPs must work for businesses that are licensed and registered where they operate. Those businesses must also provide “repair or replacement services directly to the registered owners.” If you don’t have VSP credentials yet, apply before your tool’s phase goes live.

Why ownership checks matter: a recent case

In August 2026, CWB Chicago reported that police arrested a suspect near a burglarized 2018 Honda Accord and found an Autel key programmer split between a backpack and the car. He was charged with burglary and possession of burglary tools. The report noted that these programmers “are legitimate tools used by locksmiths and automotive professionals,” which is why they attract thieves. Store the tablet securely when it’s not in use.

Frequently asked questions

What key programmer do locksmiths use?

There is no single standard tool. Autel MaxiIM tablets are one of the main lines sold to locksmiths, and no tool covers every platform, so you may need more than one. Autel’s IM608 Pro II is its flagship key and IMMO tool. The IM508S is the lower-cost tier.

Do Autel key programmers need a subscription?

Software updates are subscription-based after the included period. The IM508S includes one free year, and a US dealer lists the IM608 / IM608 Pro II renewal at $671. Separately, Autel says North American use of the IM508 and IM608 series requires an active NASTF SDRM subscription.

What is the difference between the IM508S and IM608 Pro II?

According to Autel’s store, the IM608 Pro II adds the XP400 Pro, MaxiFlash JVCI+ and MCU adapters, . The IM508S ships with the XP200. It needs the XP400 Pro for the widest coverage.

Can an Autel tool damage a car’s module?

Yes, if communication or power is interrupted. Autel’s own manual warns that ECUs may be damaged or become unrecoverable in those conditions. Backups, a stable power supply and wired connections reduce the risk.
